The grand old Pomona Hotel near Cooroy

    Cooroy (including Pomona)
Small village providing services to the surrounding timber and dairy industries.
Located 126 km north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway, Cooroy is a tiny township 25 km inland from Noosa Heads which seems to spend most of its time watching the endless traffic roar past and servicing the surrounding timber and dairy workers.

Just 10 km north of Cooroy and off the Bruce Highway is the delightful village of Pomona with the dramatic Mount Cooroora looming over it. Each year in July mountain runners from all over the world come to the town to participate in the famous 'King of the Mountain Race'. These foolish fitness fanatics actually run up the 438-metre volcanic plug known as Mount Cooroora. More sensible people can relax in the town's delightful old style Pomona Hotel or go and see a movie in the Majestic Theatre (over the railway line) which claims to be Queensland's longest-running cinema. It has a delightful sense of fun. It once had Rudolf Valentino's Son of the Sheikh running for over 156 weeks.

Every Thursday markets are held at the RSL Hall in Maple St from 8.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Pomona also holds markets on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, beside Stan Topper Park, from 6.00 a.m. to midday.

    Majestic Theatre
The Majestic Theatre, built in 1921, claims to be the world's longest-running silent cinema. Now a community-owned enterprise, it has been extensively refurbished, but maintains its historic character. It presents a range of live performance as well as films, including the silent movies for which it is famous. It still screens Rudolph Valentino in The Son of the Sheik every Thursday night, and has done since 1987. The silent classic is accompanied on the pipe organ by Ron West, who with his late wife Mandy, owned the theatre from 1974 until 2006.
