Timboon
Rural centre at the heart of a rich grazing
and dairying area.
Timboon is a small town located 152 km southwest of
Geelong, 235 km from Melbourne and 27 km south of Cobden. It is a typical rural centre
characterised by being located in a rich dairy area where the
production of milk, cheese and butter is still central to the local
economy. The other major industries in the area are timber cutting and
lime production. There are still substantial quarrying and lime kilns
in the district which provide work for the local community.
The town's name probably derives from the local
Aboriginal word 'timboun' which was reputedly a word for the pieces of
rock used to open mussels. The first Europeans into the area were
settlers who arrived in the 1870s with the site of the township being
settled in 1877. The railway reached the town in 1892 and it became
important to the town's dairy and timber industries. At its height
Timboon had 18 timber mills and tens of thousands of tonnes of timber
was processed.
Today Timboon is a pleasant small town with five
churches and a strong emphasis on servicing the surrounding rural areas.
Things to see:

for their outstanding soft cheeses notably their camembert and brie.

corner of Ford and Fells Rd, to the south of Timboon.
Trestle Railway Bridge
Located near the Val Lime Kilns to the west of town
the trestle bridge, which is located at Curdies Siding, was built in
1892. It crosses the Curdies River. The Heritage of Australia explains
"It was constructed of 20 trestles of large diameter bush timber poles
bolted together with sawn timber superstructure and footway in
traditional and utilitarian bridge and wharf building technique. The
bridge is one of the few surviving railway structures of this type in
Victoria and illustrates vernacular bridge building traditions of the
late 19th century."
Timboon Flora and Flora Reserve
The Timboon Flora and Flora Reserve is a beautiful
tract of bush with walking tracks located south of town adjacent the
road to Port Campbell.
Curdieville
Curdieville is 16 km
south-west of Timboon. It has achieved some level of local fame because
its pub (virtually the only thing of interest in the tiny village)
dates from 1833 when John and Mary Rundle built a timber house for
which they eventually acquired a hotel license. The building expanded
during the 19th century but was burnt to the ground in 1921.
Consequently the current pub - the Sportsmans Arms - is more modern
than its name and history would suggest. It has a restaurant and the
pub has a decidedly English feel about it. Fishing is popular on the
nearby Curdies River.
