    Travellers tales

QLD - North Queensland - from Alan Dixon in Canada.
From: Alan Dixon in Canada - Travelling around North Queensland ()

Back in 1995 my wife and I travelled on our holiday of a lifetime. After a short stopover in Hawaii, we travelled on to Cairns where we picked up a rental car and took a 3 week leisurely drive down the coastal Bruce Highway and Pacific highway ending in Sydney to pick up our return flight home.

Watching the television news now we are saddened to see such devastation in the northeast where we remember very pleasurable visits to places that we will always remember. Our trip to Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef, The Railway and Skytrain at Kuranda, snorkelling off the reef at the Whitsunday Islands. Every night's stopover was a memorable occasion having not pre-booked any accommodations, meeting many friendly people.

We especially remember a Didgeridoo demonstration, visiting the kangaroos and koalas at the Billabong Sanctuary near Townsville and stopping over at my cousin's home in Brisbane for a couple of days, and of course the Sydney Opera House and the famous Harbour Bridge. We even found our way out to the Taylors Arms where "The Pub with no Beer" had plenty of Fosters on tap during our visit.

A most memorable trip hopefully to be repeated.

We welcome your comments, advice, suggestions, recommendations and even your horror stories. Every story in Travellers Tales has been carefully checked. There are, as far as we can determine, no attempts at free publicity from proprietors masquerading as happy travelers.

If you have a tale to tell send us an email and we'll let others know about your experiences.
